Improper waste disposal remains one of the major environmental challenges facing many communities in Lagos. From blocked drainage channels to flooding and environmental pollution, the effects are often felt by everyone.
As the Lagos State Government intensifies efforts to tackle indiscriminate waste dumping, residents of Ikeja also have a role to play in keeping their communities clean.
Here are five simple ways residents can dispose of waste properly.
1. Use Approved Waste Collection Services
One of the safest ways to dispose household waste is registering with approved waste operators assigned by the Lagos State Government. These operators ensure that refuse is collected and transported to designated disposal sites.
Avoid patronising illegal waste collectors who may dump refuse indiscriminately.
2. Never Dump Refuse in Drainage Channels
Dumping waste inside gutters or drainage channels may seem convenient, but it often leads to blocked drains and flooding, especially during the rainy season.
Residents should ensure that all waste is properly bagged and handed over to approved waste collectors.
3. Separate Recyclable Waste
Plastic bottles, cartons, cans, paper, and some household items can be recycled instead of being thrown away.
Separating recyclable materials not only reduces environmental pollution but also supports recycling businesses and promotes environmental sustainability.
4. Dispose of Waste Only at Designated Collection Points
If your community has designated waste collection points, ensure that refuse is disposed of only in those approved locations.
Avoid dumping refuse on road medians, open spaces, street corners, or vacant plots.
5. Join Community Clean-Up Efforts
Environmental sanitation is everyone’s responsibility. Residents can participate in estate clean-up exercises, market sanitation campaigns, and community environmental initiatives.
Simple actions such as sweeping surroundings, clearing blocked drains, and educating neighbours can make a significant difference.
Keeping Ikeja clean goes beyond government enforcement. It requires the collective effort of residents, businesses, market leaders, and community associations.
A cleaner environment means healthier communities, reduced flooding, and a better quality of life for everyone.
