Zodiac Signs: Myth or Science?

By Bababunmi Agbebi

“What’s your sign?” It’s a question that has become increasingly common, especially among young people. Whether someone is blaming their temper on being an Aries or proudly claiming Virgo perfectionism, zodiac signs have become part of modern conversations, memes and even relationship advice.

Astrology, the belief that the positions of celestial bodies influence human personality and life events, has existed for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians and Greeks developed the zodiac system, dividing the sky into twelve signs based on the sun’s apparent journey throughout the year.

But does your birth month really determine your personality?

From a scientific perspective, there is no reliable evidence that zodiac signs influence personality, intelligence, success or compatibility. Psychologists often point to the Barnum Effect, the tendency for people to accept vague, general personality descriptions as uniquely accurate about themselves.

For example, statements like “You sometimes enjoy being around people but also value your alone time” could apply to almost anyone.

Despite this, astrology continues to thrive because many people find it entertaining, relatable and even comforting.

Although Nigeria is deeply religious, astrology has quietly found a place in popular culture.

Many young Nigerians share zodiac memes on X, Instagram and TikTok, while some jokingly refuse to date certain signs. Conversations about “red flags” and compatibility often include astrology, even among people who don’t fully believe in it.

For many, it’s simply harmless fun and another way to connect with friends. Others view it as a form of self-reflection rather than a prediction of destiny.

At the same time, many Nigerians, particularly those with strong Christian or Islamic beliefs reject astrology entirely, arguing that guidance about life should come from faith rather than the stars. As a result, opinions remain divided, with astrology serving more as entertainment than a widely accepted belief system.
