Nigerians have taken to social media to criticize Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham for her role in the newly released movie ‘Gangs of Lagos’.
Despite the way she stormed into the premiere on Thursday night, many have called out the actress for portraying a character that goes against her political beliefs.
Directed and produced by Jade Osiberu, the movie tells the story of childhood friends navigating their way into the world amidst the challenges of growing up on the bustling streets of Isale Eko, Lagos.
Toyin gets dragged
In the movie, Abraham played the role of a gubernatorial candidate who urges electorates to vote out the ruling government, which had held the state hostage for years.
However, in real life, Abraham had endorsed the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, in the just-concluded general elections. This led to many Nigerians on social media calling her out for portraying a character that is the opposite of her political beliefs. Toyin is yet to respond to the criticism.
Despite the backlash, the movie has received positive reviews from many viewers, who praised the director for the thrilling storyline. The cast includes other top Nollywood stars, like Tobi Bakre, Adesua Etomi Wellington, Iyabo Ojo and many more.
