To a Street known as Toyin Street

After Allen Avenue is Opebi. And then, there is Toyin.  A lot can be said about the legendary Toyin Street. Besides being a high ranking commercial area, Toyin Street is one of the most popular streets in Ikeja and by extension, Lagos state. Its got a busy road, one as busy as Allen, Opebi and other areas.

For a street with a popular name, it sure has its major relevant landmarks. There is White House Hotel and Ibis Hotel, which holds rank among the biggest hotels in Ikeja. The Nigerian Customs Service compound is located in Toyin, as well as Abiola Crescent. Toyin Street boasts of a water park too, amidst other notable landmarks in the area.

According to residents, Toyin is a peaceful environment that harbors no bad eggs or criminals. Mr. Onaji who has lived in Toyin for 27 years, gave the opinion that tranquility reigns in the area. At the same time, many recognize Olowu junction as a crime spot. Just at the end of the street, Olowu harbors unruly persons who carry guns, knives cutlasses and harass whoever is unfortunate to pass there by night time.

While majority vouch for Toyin’s immunity, some are of the opinion that “no area is 100 percent good.” As believed by Mrs. Funmilayo, “If you go to Agege, it is rough. It all depends on the individual.” To back her claim, she spoke of her childhood, growing up in Agege where they sold guns, gbana and igbo. However, it didn’t deter her from being responsible. For her, it all depends on the individual, not the environment.

From banks to religious centers, leisure hotspots and notable landmarks, Toyin street adjusts from commerce to leisure. Even with issues such as road and traffic, Toyin is one of the key areas in Ikeja from which one can move to other areas of the state capital. There are places, and there are places in Lagos. Toyin Street is one of them.
