Vice President Kashim Shettima has described Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, saying they remain the country’s largest source of employment and a major driver of economic growth.

Speaking at the 8th National MSME Awards in Abuja, the Vice President said about 90 percent of businesses operating in Nigeria fall within the MSME category, providing jobs for more than 60 million Nigerians and contributing significantly to livelihoods across the country.

Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Shettima said the Federal Government is focused on creating an environment where small businesses can thrive through improved infrastructure, business-friendly reforms and targeted support programmes.

According to him, the goal is not just to provide grants or loans but to build an enterprise-driven economy where entrepreneurs have the tools needed to grow sustainable businesses.

“Nigeria needs your ideas, your jobs and your leadership,” the Vice President said while encouraging entrepreneurs to continue innovating despite prevailing economic challenges.

As conversations around economic growth continue, many business owners will be watching closely to see how government policies translate into practical support for small businesses across the country.
