A viral infographic claiming that the Federal Government had introduced a new vehicle tax from July 1, 2026, sparked anxiety online. For many Nigerians already dealing with rising transport costs, the message felt believable and worrying.
But the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has now dismissed the claim as false, describing the circulating infographic as misleading and unauthorised.
What the Viral Message Claimed
The now-viral graphic alleged that owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles would be required to pay a new levy through banks, online platforms, or designated agencies starting July 1.
It also directed members of the public to a website the NRS says it is not its official portal. According to the agency, the information did not come from the government or any recognised institution.
The rumour gained traction partly because Nigerians are already discussing wider tax reforms and new revenue measures. With public trust often low and economic pressure high, many people were quick to assume the claim was real.
That reaction shows how quickly misinformation can spread when it touches transport, taxes, or daily expenses.
The Bigger Lesson
For many residents, this is also a reminder to verify policy claims before reacting or sharing them.
In a city where cost of living conversations are constant, fake announcements can create unnecessary panic.
