The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have introduced a one-off ₦4,000 verification fee for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
The new arrangement is aimed at ending repeated charges for the verification of candidates’ West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results during the admission process.
In a joint statement signed by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, and the Acting Director, Public Affairs, JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, the two bodies said the arrangement is expected to provide relief for admission seekers who have often had to undergo repeated verification of their academic credentials by different institutions.
The collaboration, according to the statement, is designed to put candidates’ interests first by reducing unnecessary costs and administrative stress while simplifying the admission process and safeguarding the integrity and security of academic records.
Under the new arrangement, candidates whose admissions are regulated by JAMB are required to verify their WAEC results once through JAMB. The verification outcome will subsequently be made available to the relevant tertiary institution where the candidate is seeking admission.
They further stated that institutions would not require candidates who have successfully completed the verification exercise through JAMB to pay additional fees for the verification of the same result.
The new arrangement is expected to make O’Level result verification more centralised while reducing the additional costs and administrative steps faced by admission seekers during the tertiary admission process.
