2024 is that drama-filled reality show that our dear country Nigeria needed and most definitely did not need a script. From economic woes to social media tension, it’s been a wild ride. Despite these challenges Nigerian pop culture served as our distraction, a much-needed escape from the chaos.
We’re counting down 10 top viral moments that stole our attention, sparked joy, and started conversations in 2024. Here are some of the best moments that defined this stressful year.
“Bobo Toh Risky”
In April 2024, Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison after he was found guilty of mutilating the Nigerian currency.
After Bobrisky got released in August, a rumour that he didn’t spend the whole of his sentence in jail sparked controversy about corruption in the Nigerian prison and justice system. Anyway, Bobrisky came back home to a lot of cheers, money donations and boos from admirers and haters alike but now Bobo is presently out of Nigeria .
Pastor Tobi & Pastor Bolaji
Reports surfaced online on December 3,2024 that Pastor Bolaji Idowu was arrested by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, for alleged N1.5billion fraud but has denied allegations of involvement in a ₦1.5 billion fraud. Similarly there were reports that the British Government is set to deport popular pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, to Nigeria after losing his case against deportation at the immigration tribunal.
Davido’s wedding
It was a #Chivido June 2024. Singer Davido married his longtime girlfriend Chioma in Lagos. The venue was so buzzed, that drivers and commuters were stuck in traffic. One could almost mistake it for a concert.
“Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo Challenge”
Mike Ejeagha’s classic “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo” experienced a resurgence, sparking a viral dance challenge. The trend took off after popular comedian and content creator Brain Jotter initiated the challenge, inspiring numerous celebrities and the general public to create their own versions.
Wizkid vs Davido
This year, A-listers Wizkid and Davido went from subtly dissing each other to publicly throwing jabs on social media(Not new though). The singers resurrected their longtime beef in April after unprovoked clapbacks and rants at his fans and colleagues.
The Veterans’ Exit
In March 2024, after an amputation and a long battle with his health, comedic actor Mr Ibu passed away at 64. In less than 24 hours, another actor, Quadri Oyebamiji (AKA Sisi Quadri) died too. In less than four months, we lost another Icon Onyeka Onwenu.
#EndBadGovernance protest
The same spirit that brought out agitated Nigerians during the #EndSARS protest in 2020 hovered in the air again in August 2024. From August 1 to August 10, thousands of tired and frustrated Nigerians raised #EndBadGovernance placards to protest this poverty-inducing tenure of President Tinubu’s administration.
“President General Among The Nation”
The song “President General Among the Nation,” originally recorded by singer Bisong Constance, took TikTok by storm, becoming a dance sensation among Gen Z and users worldwide. Although it was first released in October 2021 and initially overlooked, it found new life after being adopted by the unassuming choir of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Church.
“No Gree For Anybody”
At the start of a new year, it’s common for people to make resolutions . This was evident with the viral social media trend “No Gree For Anybody,” meaning “Don’t tolerate nonsense from anyone.” The phrase resonated widely, with both young and old embracing it during the early months of the year.
“Just Give Me My Money”
Another trending moment that swept through 2024 involved participants humorously saying the phrase “Just give me my money” in a funny voice, followed by cheers and applause—except for one person who is deliberately left out.
