The Ekiti State Government has issued a ban on the planned 72 hours kissing marathon to set a Guinness World Record in the state.
A group called Sugartee had advertised the event, which was supposed to start on July 7 at a popular amusement park in the state capital, Ado.
But the government sent a letter on July 3, 2023, from the Ministry of Arts and Culture to the Ekiti State Hoteliers Association, announcing the ban on the competition.
The letter issued by the government
The letter, signed by the Director of Tourism, Adebanji Adelusi, on behalf of the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dele Ogunsemoyin, said that any venue hosting the event would face serious penalties.
The letter explained that the planned event, called “Kiss-a-thon,” was seen as absurd, unhealthy, and immoral. The government believed it would harm the state’s reputation and go against the values of the people, especially the youth. Therefore, they did not want the event to take place.
