Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion, there have been significant changes in verification, payment methods, a name change, amongst others.

One of the changes on X, previously known as Twitter, was the introduction of a paid subscription service that offers user verification.

Creators on X who are verified and have amassed millions of impressions on their posts, became eligible for ad revenue sharing.

As a result, there has been a significant increase in the number of users rushing to verify their handles in order to become eligible.

Rise of fake accounts on X

However, the verification process, which used to involve careful scrutiny and validation of account authenticity, can now be completed by simply paying a fee.

It’s unfortunate that this new development has led to the rise of fake accounts that are seeking to gain impressions by impersonating popular accounts.

For instance, Nigerian Investigative reporter, David Hundeyin recently expressed his dissatisfaction at having to deal with a fake account impersonating him.

The fake account not only copied his identity, and content, but also paid for verification and managed to attract followers. Fortunately, the account was reported and taken down.

Reactions:

Many other Nigerians have equally lamented at the new verification process, and growth of these fake accounts. Here are some comments:

@DrGodwinUkeje: This impersonation is injurious and should not be taken with a grain of salt. Impersonation is not only a breach of trust but also poses significant risks to personal reputation, safety, and mental well-being. Digital platforms owe it to their users to maintain rigorous verification processes and promptly address cases of impersonation. In an era where online interactions can have real-world consequences, safeguarding the integrity of digital identities should be paramount.

@Chairmandike: Elon musk really needs to do something about this to avoid fraudulent activities amongst others.

@UnlimitedEniola: Exactly!!! It’s really sad how Musk has destroyed the essence of verification. I got verified because of what I’m doing but musk came and mockery of it. I am verified on Instagram because of what I’m doing and don’t have to pay.

@Kendominic2: You are very correct. I was surprised during my verification. I was like, no ID request, etc. I was utterly disappointed.

@AdemoyeJohn: Issue here is that X doesn’t recognise your person, but more of an account with so so handle. So even impersonating accounts can be verified and won’t be checked for originality. So impersonation might be difficult to tackle and get to the root of things. Don’t even think he’s interested in that.
