Job hunting: The wolves beneath job offers

By Oluwafunmilola Onabanjo

Meet Mr. Wolf. He’s a Manager at Wolfmort Company. His greatest joy comes when he employs people in the company because that’s the one chance for him to take pleasure in the female recruits. He makes whimsical, amorous advances at them while promising them bountiful incentives coupled with the salary if they accept. As for the male recruits, he’s holy enough. Rather than propositioning sex to them, he rips off the little change left in their pockets and stashes the money in his personal account.

At least, he’s offering them a job. They should be glad and we all know getting a job at this present age can be an arduous task – only the violent and brave ones taketh it by force. If they are not up for it, they can leave. Another smart job seeker who knows life is about “give and take” will grab the offer. That’s his belief.

Mr. Wolf’s business colleague, Ms. She-wolf is also in the same ludicrous  “the give and take” league. Hers is slightly worse. She still manages to slash her staffs’ salaries at every opportunity she gets for silly reasons. Those that dared to lay complaints face her wrath. They find “sack letters” on their desk the next day.

“How dare they complain? Do they know the number of people at my beck and call seeking these jobs?”

“Ungrateful fellows! I will do the world a favour by employing another person.”

And the cycle goes on and on…

Remember The tech guy recently called out on Twitter?

Yes! The same Chizom tweeted Don Jazzy asking if he would like to sponsor 100 Nigerian youths to learn how to code at his online mentorship program (Code Hub Africa Tech). It’s 15k per person.

The legendary Don Jazzy accepted. He donated the sum of N1.5 million naira to enable 100 young Nigerians learn how to code.

Rather than selecting people at random through a fair process, Mr. Chizom decided to go through shady channels. If not for the timely intervention of people that called him out, he might have eaten his cake and had it. Did you know he denied the accusations at first? But many shreds of evidence kept pouring in; he had no choice but to apologize. Check the screenshot below.

Truth be told, Chizom is just one of the thousands of employers out there in these shady acts – very good at ‘maneuvering’ applicants and people entirely.

The wolf with an irresistible offer

Like Chizom’s, there are thousands of CEOs and Managers who are ready to recruit more staff. They entice job applicants with mind-blowing offers that come with the job but only if they are ready to pay the price for the offer.

They lure unsuspecting employees into their snares (requesting or demanding sexual favor, accompanied by an implied or overt promise of preferential treatment).

They are the wolves beneath job offers, boisterous and egocentric. They are less concerned about the consequences of their actions or they believe they can’t be caught since they try to cover their tracks well.

The wolf’s tactics

There are many means some CEOs and Managers use when playing wolves in sheep’s clothing. They are like red flags one should be wary of. Though the list is endless but below are the commonest tactics:

  • S/he makes constant flattery comments about your appearance with a hint of sex appeal
  • S/he steal glances at you or even gives you flirtatious looks
  • Striking conversations or questions around sex or via text messages, flirtatious chats or emails
  • Constant requests to grab a drink with him/her at secluded locations
  • Unwanted touching or physical contact
  • Displays of pornography or sexually explicit or degrading materials
  • Requests for sexual favors and pressure for sex
  • S/he can even go as far as threatening employees that reject their sexual advances either through physical or emotional blackmail.

Can one ever be free?

A friend of mine once told me her boss propositioned her for sex. She wasn’t interested but she also didn’t want to lose the job. She said her boss went as far as messaging her, even calling her at night for possible hangouts – just the two of them. She feared she might be in danger if she reported him to higher authority. So that left her with two options: accept the advances and retain her job or decline and lose her job.

In the end, with the help of another friend, they exposed all of the boss’s atrocities on social media, with screenshots and recorded conversations as proof. It was a risky plan but it was worth it. Others who were victims started submitting more evidence against him. Justice was served.

Needless to say, there are still thousands of wolves out there hunting for the next prey in search of a job. That is not to say all CEOs and Managers are evil. Of course not!

There are still job offers out there with no strings attached.

  1. So the Chisom guy is even married.
    Nonsense and ingredient.

It’s how a sizeable number of these wolves has loving and caring, beautiful smartass ladies as wives and they still chook eyes outside that irks me more.

  2. The rate at which there are now many wolves pretending to be great persons in sheep clothing is alarming.

    God should help us!

  3. One can actually be free, depends on how smart the “prey” is… there’s need for change though, some people are just naturally wicked..its due to the fact that these “wolves” are aware that Nigerians do not have a choice, it still balls down to our clueless leaders

  4. It’s annoying that these people say that’s how life works. Honestly bring string enough not to play by their rules is what employees and job seekers need.
