2024 has been remarkable in the movie industry, with exciting sequels, captivating adaptations, and fresh releases that have kept audiences on the edge.
From action-packed blockbusters to gripping sci-fi and animated masterpieces, this year’s movies have transformed the moviegoing experience, with many achieving significant global box office success.
Here are some of the best movies of 2024 in no particular order. Which ones were your favorite?
Deadpool & Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s much-awaited team-up combined humour, and intense action. It was a perfect blend of comedy and chaos. The movie explores the dynamic between the two characters as they navigate their personal struggles, all while facing new challenges.
Inside Out 2
Pixar revisited the emotional world of Riley, now a teenager, in this heartfelt sequel. This time, the story delved into the complexities of growing up as the emotions navigate the challenges of adolescence. The movie introduced four new emotions—Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui—which join the original lineup of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
In this sequel, Godzilla and Kong returned to the screens to face a threat hidden deep within the planet, challenging their very existence and the survival of the human race. Godzilla x Kong became a box office success grossing over $571.8 million worldwide against a production budget of $135–150 million, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2024.
Monkey Man
Directed by and starring Dev Patel, Monkey Man follows the intense journey of an underground fighter named Kid, who wears a monkey mask as he participates in a dangerous fight club. Traumatized by the murder of his mother at the hands of corrupt elites, he embarks on a violent path of vengeance. The movie blends gritty action with a deep emotional story of trauma and revenge. The action-thriller tackled Indian corruption.
Dune: Part Two
Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Dune expanded on Frank Herbert’s epic saga with stunning visuals and intense performances. The movie explores Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) rise as he partners with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he must prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.
The Substance
The Substance is a psychological thriller about a fading celebrity who takes a black-market drug, a cell-replicating substance that temporarily rejuvenates her, making her a younger, more enhanced version of herself. The story delves into the effects of this mysterious substance. The film stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid.
The Fall Guy
The Fall Guy offers a thrilling mix of action, comedy, and drama. The movie tells the story of a seasoned stuntman (played by Ryan Gosling) who returns to the industry for a project led by his ex-girlfriend, portrayed by Emily Blunt. What starts as a nostalgic reunion turns into a high-stakes mystery when the lead actor on the set vanishes.
Wicked
Adapted from the iconic Broadway musical, Wicked delves into the untold origins of the Witches of Oz, spotlighting the intricate bond between Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West. Featuring Cynthia Erivo as the ambitious and misunderstood Elphaba and Ariana Grande as the charismatic yet complex Glinda, the film reimagines the world of Oz through a fresh lens. The movie is currently showing in cinemas.
Rebel Ridge
The movie explored systemic corruption and racism within law enforcement through a gripping narrative about a man taking on a deeply flawed system. Rebel Ridge premiered on Netflix in September and was praised for its intelligent script, well-structured action sequences, and strong performances, especially from Aaron Pierre, the lead cast.
Venom: The Last Dance
In Venom, Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock, the journalist bonded with the Venom symbiote. The plot involves Eddie and Venom being hunted by both their worlds– a mysterious military man and alien monsters from Venom’s home world. The movie grossed approximately $468.5 million globally.
