If you’ve ever driven through Ikeja, chances are you’ve been on Simbiat Abiola Way.
It is one of the busiest roads in the Lagos capital, connecting Allen Avenue, Oba Akran Avenue and several residential and commercial areas. Every day, thousands of commuters, shoppers, workers and business owners pass through it, often without giving a second thought to the name on the street sign.
But who was Simbiat Abiola, and why was one of Ikeja’s most important roads named after her?
The answer takes us back to the life of a woman remembered not only as the wife of one of Nigeria’s most prominent businessmen and politicians but also as a philanthropist whose quiet generosity touched many lives.
Chief (Mrs.) Simbiat Atinuke Abiola was the first wife of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola, the widely acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
While her husband became a national political figure, Simbiat Abiola built a reputation of her own through charity, business and community service. She was known for supporting education, empowering women and contributing to causes that improved the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
Her life was cut short in 1992 after she died in a tragic road accident in Lagos. Her passing was widely mourned across the country, with many remembering her as a compassionate woman who used her influence to help others.
In recognition of her contributions and enduring legacy, the Lagos State Government renamed the road now known as Simbiat Abiola Way in her honour. Today, the road serves as a lasting reminder of a woman whose impact extended far beyond her family name.
Today, Simbiat Abiola Way is much more than a major route through Ikeja.
It is home to banks, restaurants, hotels, shopping outlets, offices and small businesses that keep the local economy moving. Every weekday, the road comes alive with professionals heading to work, entrepreneurs opening their shops and residents going about their daily routines.
Its strategic location also makes it one of the key links between Allen Avenue, Oba Akran, Opebi and other parts of Ikeja, helping to ease movement within Lagos’ commercial hub.
For many visitors, it is simply another busy road. But for those who know its history, the name carries a story of service, resilience and remembrance.
