Living in Nigeria is no easy fit. In the fourth quarter, Nigeria’s unemployment rate rose by 33%, making it the second highest on the global list. People who graduated years ago still remain without jobs. With the state of the economy, it would be wise for undergraduates to begin securing their finances so they can survive if they don’t find employment after graduation. In this article, you will find ways to generate income as a student.
1. Content creator:
With the rise of technology and a lot of businesses going online, content creation is also on the rise. One of the best things about technology is that it gives you the opportunity to work from the comfort of your home. All you have to do is to highlight your interests. Are you interested in blogging? Creative writing? Journalism? Or do you occasionally want to send in your articles to magazines and websites? Find your niche and stick to it. One site that I have discovered that you can create content for is Scooper. It’s a news app that is always open to hiring freelancers. You get paid 0.8 dollars for every article that you write. The pay isn’t that great but it is helpful. One student, Elishama Okpor says, “Working for scooper helped me, as a student to gain more writing experience. The pay is so so but I am glad for the opportunity.”
2. Transcriber/Translator:
Surprisingly, a lot of money can be made by transcribing. Transcribing means turning videos/audios into texts. Sometimes, you could be asked to transcribe the text into another language, and this is translation.
3. Affiliate Marketing:
This is one moneymaker on the rise. With Affiliate Marketing you get a commission from a company and then you sell their products. You can develop your e-commerce store, blogs, websites to sell and advertise. When a customer clicks on the link to complete the transaction of a product, they are redirected to your affiliate’s partner’s site. You then get a cut from every item purchased.
4. Tutoring:
Teaching is the best way to learn. If you have a substantial amount of knowledge on a topic, why not share that knowledge? A lot of students are willing to pay for tutorials.
5. Youtuber/Tiktoker:
Do you fancy being on screen? Do you enjoy making videos of yourself? Then this one is for you. Accounts with a certain number of views and engagements get paid. The higher the number, the more you earn. Top YouTubers or Tiktokers can make millions per year. If you don’t like showing up on camera, you could make tutorial videos on content that you are positive people would enjoy watching. “It has been fun, really. YouTube has made it easy for beginners like me to work as a content creator and its algorithm has helped me reach audience outside my geographical location,” says Olamide Lawal, a student at the University of Lagos.
There are lots of other ways that you can make money as a student. Just look around you and figure out what you can do.
