On Sunday, Michelle Yeoh, a renowned actress from Malaysia, achieved a significant milestone by winning the distinguished Best Actress Oscar award.

Her win is historical as she becomes the first Asian woman to be bestowed with this prestigious accolade in the Best Actress category.

Michelle’s exceptional performance in the comedy-action drama Everything Everywhere All at Once played a major role in achieving this feat.

Yeoh’s speech after the award 

During her acceptance speech, the 6o year old actress expressed her gratitude to the Academy and acknowledged the significance of her win, stating “this is history in the making!”

She also addressed the little boys and girls who look up to her, saying that her win is a “beacon of hope and possibilities” and proof that big dreams can come true.

In a powerful message to women, Yeoh urged them not to give up and never let anyone tell them they are past their prime. She then dedicated the award to her mother and all the mothers around the world, calling them the real superheroes.

Yeoh’s portrayal of Evelyn in the movie “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” where she played the role of a multiverse-navigating laundromat proprietor being audited by government officials, won her the award. The movie itself received a total of seven awards, including Best Picture.

How she started acting 

Yeoh made her acting debut in 1997’s “Tomorrow Never Dies,” a James Bond movie. Since then, he has appeared in a number of blockbusters, including “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” in 2000 and “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2018. Yet, “Everything Everywhere” was her first leading role in a film.

She became well-known in the 1990s by pulling off her own stunts in a number of Hong Kong action films, including “Supercop,” in which she co-starred with Jackie Chan. The James Bond entry “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997), the blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians,” and the best picture nominee and foreign language film Oscar winner “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) all featured her as a leading lady (2018).

Tems loses out; Nigerians react to her dress

In other news, popular female musician Temilade Openiyi, Grammy-winning Nigerian afro-pop singer and international sensation, has lost out on the prestigious Oscars awards 2023 at the ongoing 95th edition of the Academy Awards. 

 She was nominated for her contribution as a songwriter on ‘Lift Me Up,’ one of the songs on Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

She was the first female Nigerian singer to be nominated for that category, this was a major achievement but she did not clinch the award and lost to some Indian artists
