African-American rapper, Akon has shed more light on how Afrobeat music was brought to the limelight and how some Afrobeat musicians were signed by international labels.
In a chat with the BootLeg Kev Podcast, the record producer shared that social media was one of the major tools that brought Afrobeat music to the limelight.
According to him, he signed popular Nigerian singer, Wizkid to his record label in 2008. He met the Nigerian musician when he came to Africa after the world cup.

He admitted that Wizkid was the first Afrobeat musician to ever be signed to an International label and his aim then was to bring ‘local music’ across to the international world.
He also added that after signing Wizkid, they also signed the popular musician, Psquare and he admitted that at that time their music was the biggest stream on every music application.
Akon continued by mentioning that when the Psquare was well recognized back then, Wizkid’s fame also started to grow.
The record label producer stated that when the musicians has gotten fame in Nigeria, they tried to sell it to the US but at that time they were not feeling it. However, in 2018 Wizkid left the record label to stand on his own.

In another news, Ayo Balogun also known Wizkid has thrown shade at MC Jollof after the latter unearthed a year-long fracas.
MC Jollof had dragged Wizkid over a promise of N10M that was not fulfilled, insinuating that the artist is not as generous as he would want others to believe.
What MC Jollof had been saying against Wizkid had prompted him to send a subtle but well-understood message to the skit maker.
