Wizkid robbed at 64th Grammy Awards: Yay or Nay?

By Ofili Nonso

April 3rd 2022 saw to the gathering of icons at the annual Grammy Awards ceremony held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The televised event hosted by Trevor Noah

Names like Jon Batiste, Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler the Creator were on the lips of everyone as they were notably awarded. Jon with 5 awards, earning himself “the biggest winner of the night”. Olivia surprised everyone by claiming 3. Even Kanye West was honored, despite his performance ban at the ceremony.

However, for Wizkid and Burna Boy, Nigeria’s frontrunners in the Grammy Awards the night ended in disappointment. For Starboy, the Best Global Music Album & Best Global Music Performance awards slipped his grasp, resting in Angélique Kidjos’ and Arooj Aftabs’ respectively.

“You should have seen Wizkid’s fans last year. Omo, we dinnor hear word at all. Look at karma now: Wizkid’s big L and Davido is at the world Cup. I’ve said it before, 30BG big pass una papa.” Success, 23, a student and staunch Davido fan added. Moyo, a member of Wizkid FC claimed that Wizkid was “robbed” and deserved that award more than Angélique Kidjo.

Trust Nigerians, especially Wizkid FC not to take these losses lightly. Many took to Twitter to express their disappointments, citing Angélique as unfair and preventing the younger generation from stepping up. Still, her career defense remains strong: she has performed at Obama’s inauguration and sang at UN General Assembly. Not only that, she has performed at the Olympics and FIFA World Cup opening ceremony.

Coming from Pelumi, a female Corper; “My anger with Wizkid’s fans is that they overdo most times. Now Angélique has gone ahead to block her comments on IG, cus they’re attacking her. It doesn’t make sense. See why I don’t stan anyone. Una madness no dey end?”

@bigdice01, a Twitter user also said:  “Some of you were waiting for Wizkid to win so you’ll drag and ridicule Davido, but the ways of God are not the ways of Man.. now see how the table turn.”

Davido currently features on a World Cup official soundtrack, a win some fans presume bigger than the Grammys itself.

Whether the Grammy awards were robbed from Wizkid and presented to Angélique Kidjo, or J-Cole deserved “Best Rap Album,” Grammy will still be Grammy. However, with Wizkids’ and Burna Boy’s loss, this year’s ceremony raises a question : Yay or Nay?

  1. someone said angelique kiddo sings old ass songs. even though she is good, i still believe made in lagos deluxe should have won that shit 😤😤

  2. Lol. Not even a Wizkid fan, but MIL shoulda won that. But I guess it was just meant for Lagos 😭😭😭😹

  3. Not a Wizkid Stan buh… He should have won at the Grammys… Angelique Kidjo sings good songs though..

  4. If you ask me, Wizkid’s album really for good. However, Angélique Kidjo did better,to be honest. My greatest joy is that Davido wasn’t caught in the drama.
