Nasir El-Rufai, the ex-Governor of Kaduna State, has admitted that he and several governors from northern Nigeria strategically utilized religion as a political instrument to secure Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.
According to his statement, the purpose behind using religion as a political strategy was to address and tackle the problem of tribalism and religious influence in Nigerian politics
In a video, the former governor expressed these views while addressing an audience in Kaduna, speaking in the Hausa language. The occasion was an event held before he departed from office, as he prepared to hand over to his successor.

Muslim/Muslim ticket is a plan
Additionally, El-Rufai emphasized that the Muslim/Muslim ticket, which he utilized to achieve political success in Kaduna State, has now been replicated on a national level that is Nigeria as a whole with the emergence of Bola Tinubu as president and Kashim Shettima as vice president in Nigeria
He declared that he, along with other northern governors, effectively advocated for the emergence of a Yoruba Muslim candidate from the South West as the president, despite facing opposition from certain quarters.
Ex-governor El-Rufi disclosed that Professor Akintola and some other leaders from Lagos claimed that the Yoruba people from the South-West have a problem, their Muslims cannot contest, and win an election hence, a Christian will have to contest and have a Muslim from the North as a vice which was what prompted their approval for Vice-President Shetima and President Tinubu.
Reactions: Yoruba Christians can now see that it’s not about YORUBA RONU
Many netizens air their political view on the post. See reactions below:
@DavidHarts2: Yoruba Christians can now see that it’s not about YORUBA RONU, but about ISLAM. It’ll soon get very much interesting.
@Akachuk1: El-Rufai said they deceived the Christians that is not about religion but is all lies that APC WANT Muslim dominant in Nigeria.
@NelsonOttah: It is sad that non indigenous Nigerians are dictating for indigenous Nigerians. Since they invaded northern Nigerian and some part of southwest, indigenous Nigerians have known no peace.
@lawishaq: The same way Peter Obi used religion to get millions of votes especially in the North Central part of Nigeria.
@ipcjustice: The statement made by El-Rufai bears resemblance to a historical statement by Ahmadu Bello, who expressed his determination to dip the Qur’an in the Atlantic Ocean.
@Banks_Hoc: We Christians thought we knew what Islam is, until HELL-RUFAI defined it. It is more than a relationship that muslims consider to have with Allah. They might call it a way of living or an ethical system but there’s more to it, Islam is a political ideology.
