A Nigerian couple accepted a bunch of firewood presented to them on their wedding day and the situation got netizens in fits of laughter.
In a viral video, a couple was seen smiling at their family and friends who brought them wedding presents.
They sat down receiving each gift as it was presented. They had a handshake and a heartwarming smile to give to the presenter in return.
Spotted on the line of those who had a gift to offer the new couple was a man with a bunch of firewood.
The firewood was presented to them, evoking laughter and surprise among those who saw it.
In the background however was seen other people waiting to present their gifts which included a big firewood pot, kitchen utensils and so on.
It is tradition
Despite the reactions this has evoked, such gifts are normal in most African weddings. On the wedding day, the woman is usually given things enough to properly furnish her kitchen.
Some traditions go as far as providing her with enough foodstuff to last her first year of marriage, so she doesn’t have to go to the market throughout her first year of marriage.
Isn’t that just beautiful?
In the comment section, netizens tried to explain the symbolism of the gift
Gafar Salaudeen: “It’s their culture, respect it. You can see someone holding a big pot. It’s part of the gifts”
Women/Widows Ikot Ukpong: “Positively, teaches me that it’s easy to break a single firewood but if the couples are united as a bunch of firewood gifted to them, they’ll be unbreakable”.
unusual_mara: “It is a good gift, wood is meant to lighten fire so that means their fire will keep burning,no man can quench it…”
