This month of May, Nollywood promises an exciting lineup of movies, delivering a blend of intriguing storylines and top-tier cast.
These movies will either be hitting the cinemas and streaming platforms. IkejaBird has compiled a list of five (5) of these exciting Nollywood movies to look out for this May.
WATER AND GARRI:
“Water and Garri,” directed by Meji Alabi, marks Tiwa Savage’s debut lead role in a feature film. The narrative follows an ambitious fashion designer who, after a decade in America, returns to her homeland due to a family tragedy. Upon her return, she finds a changed landscape—marked by heightened violence and tension. As she reconnects with family, friends, and an old flame, she must confront her past scars and lingering guilt. Joining Tiwa Savage in the cast are Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde. The film is set to premiere on Prime Video on May 10th.
UNO: THE F IN FAMILY:
Produced by Ebuka Njoku, this family dramedy centers on a young man who reconnects with his estranged family after a decade, stirring up emotions. The film explores themes of love, complexity, secrets, pride, and joy. Starring Nkem Owoh, Jennifer Eliogu, Alvin Abayomi, Tomi Ojo, Keezyto, Sophia Chisom, and DJ Capello, it’s set to hit cinemas on May 17th.
FUNMILAYO RANSOME-KUTI:
“Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” is a biographical film depicting the life of the late Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, a distinguished Nigerian political campaigner and women’s rights advocate, as well as the mother of Afrobeat icon, Fela Kuti. The movie chronicles her journey as she ignites a revolution against colonialism and patriarchy in Nigeria, shaping the destiny of her nation forever. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the film features Kehinde Bankole, Joke Silva, and Adunni Ade in starring roles. “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” will hit cinemas on May 17th.
ABURO:
Directed by Yemi Morafa, “Aburo” follows the story of a street-smart boy with impressive sprinting skills, who encounters Mide, a former international athlete determined to turn him into a star. Aburo must navigate his ties with his street gang and his destiny. The film features a stellar cast including Efa Iwara, Toni Tones, Maleek from Ikorodu Bois, Yemi Cregx, Maleek Sani, Peju Ogunmola, and Charles Inojie. Currently, it’s screening in cinemas.
CRIMINAL:
This intense thriller revolves around a hospital hostage situation. It’s directed by Dolapo Adigun and produced by Anthill Studios. The cast includes Uzor Arukwe, Funlola Aofiyebi Raimi, Gbubemi Ejeye, and Segun Arinze.
