The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) for 2023 have introduced a new category called ‘Best Afrobeats.’ This category was added to the list of nominations for the event, which were announced on Wednesday.
The first nominees in this new category include French superstar Aya Nakamura and several Nigerian singers such as Asake, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema.
Additionally, Rema’s popular song with Selena Gomez, ‘Calm Down,’ has received nominations in the ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Collaboration’ categories.

Afrobeats Category
In the ‘Best African Act’ category, nominees include Asake, Burna Boy, Cameroonian artist Libianca, Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz, and South Africa’s Tyler ICU.
Burna Boy has also been nominated in the ‘Best Live Performer’ category, competing with artists like Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and others.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations with seven in total, including ‘Best Artist,’ ‘Best Song,’ and ‘Best Video’ for her single ‘Anti-Hero.’
The 2023 MTV EMAs are set to take place on November 5, 2023, in Paris, France.
