A Nigerian novelist Obinna Udenwe who is also a practicing lawyer has extensively explained why Linda Ikeji is not legally bound to seek permission from Aluu4 parents to produce the film.
Linda Ikeji has come under fire for going ahead to release Dark October, a movie that traces the life and catastrophic end of four young Nigerians.
The novelist explained that Linda Ikeji did not go against the limits of the law, adding that he could do so as well.
“Linda Ikeji does not need the permission of the Aluu4 families to tell their story in a film. Just the way I do not need their permission to fictionalize it in a novel.
“We could have 20 stories based on Aluu4 and 10 films on it. Linda Ikeji can only need permission when a story has already been written and she lifts that particular story for her film.
“Say, I write a book on Aluu4 “Dreams Killed” and Linda’s film follows my book’s plot-line then I could sue her. The scenarios are not the same,” the lawyer and novelist said.
Reactions to what Obinna Udenwe said
Onyeka Nwelue said “Whenever it is Linda, Nigerians change their rules. It is like she is holding their destiny.“
Amaka Azie reacted: ” Nigerians hate Linda Ikeji so much for nothing. She represents everything they wish they could be, but don’t have the courage to be. An independent, wealthy woman without a man who still has what she wants. The house, the car, the child, the lovers. If she breathes, they attack her
They would not complain if it was by anybody else.”
Anote Ajelurou said: ” I don’t know what the brohaha is all about. I just think that those opposing or saying she needs permission are simply seeking knowledge on how these things work. Thanks for educating them Obinna.”
