The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially announced the cut-off marks that will guide admissions into tertiary institutions across Nigeria for the 2024/2025 academic session.
With well over 1 million candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) each year, these cut-off marks serve as an important benchmark in the competitive admission process.
What is JAMB Cut off mark?
The JAMB cut-off mark is the minimum score you need to qualify for admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic, or college of education.
General JAMB Cut-off Marks
For the 2024/2025 session, JAMB has set the following general cut-off marks:
- Universities (Federal, State and Private) – 150
- Polytechnics – 120
- Colleges of Education/Innovative Institutions – 100
It is crucial to note that while JAMB has prescribed these base cut-off marks, individual tertiary institutions reserve the right to set higher cut-off marks depending on the course/program and the competition for available spaces.
Departmental/Course Cut-off Marks
Owing to variations in the demand for different courses and the number of available admission slots, institutions proceed to set departmental/course cut-off marks that are usually higher than JAMB’s general cut-off marks. For instance:
University of Lagos has set 200 as the cut-off mark for admission into courses like Medicine, Engineering, Law etc.
Covenant University requires a minimum of 190 cut-off mark for its most competitive courses.
The cut-off for Computer Engineering at Federal University of Technology Minna is 200.
Courses like Pharmacy, Architecture and Mass Communication at many universities tend to have cut-off marks from 180-200.
This trend highlights that scoring above the JAMB general cut-off mark is simply the bare minimum requirement. Candidates must pay close attention to the specific cut-off marks published by their preferred institutions and departments.
Other Admission Requirements
While a candidate’s UTME score remains a critical factor, the overall admission process takes into account several other criteria like:
Performance in Post-UTME screening tests conducted by institutions
Grades attained in O’Level subjects, especially Math, English, and relevant science subjects
Educational body’s/institution’s admission policies regarding factors like catchment areas, ex-students’ quotas etc.
Candidates must endeavor to fulfill all the necessary admission requirements outlined by their chosen institutions in order to secure admissions into their preferred courses.
As competition for admissions intensifies yearly, it is imperative for candidates to stay updated with the latest cut-off mark information published by JAMB and their preferred institutions. Meeting and exceeding set cut-off marks remains a crucial step towards achieving the dreams of tertiary education in Nigeria.
