Brilliant Mwangala Maunga was only 12 years old when she built a solar powered water purifier for her community.
The young girl hails from Lusaka, Zambia and currently attends Roma Girls Secondary School; she’s also a child rights advocate.
The widespread presence of diseases which are transmitted by water called water borne diseases in her community led to her innovation.
She wanted to provide potable water in her community which would eventually lead to a reduction of disease occurrences.
At just 12 years, her desire led her to source for materials to build a water purifier.
12 year old girl wins multiple awards
In 2018, Mwangala received an award for being the best inventor in the Science and Technology category at the DStv Africa MultiChoice – Cartoon Network Powerpuff Girls’ Awards.
In 2019, the child star became the youngest recipient of the Brenda Muntemba Award as an (Emerging Young African Leader) at the PUSH WOMEN AWARDS.
Yet again, she was the youngest and only Zambian speaker at the Virtual International Youth Day in August 2020 which had Directors from African Union (AU)& UNICEF in attendance.
In December that same year, she was awarded a SDG badge of honour, courage and bravery and work in the fight against cyberbullying by the UNDP Country Resident Representative,
Mwangala Maunga was also named the Youngest STEM Change Maker at the Genius Education Zambia Awards.
To continue her advocacy roles and empower the female child, she pioneered an organisation called Girl Power Platform in 2021.
Now 16 years of age, Mwangala Maunga remains passionate about Science and Technology and continues to seek avenues to ensure the girl child is not disadvantaged.

14-year-old Nigerian girl wins 7 medals across the world in mathematics contests
Meanwhile, an exceptionally brilliant 14-year-old Nigerian girl, Fatima Adamu Maikusa, has won 7 medals in 7 international mathematics competitions.
Fatima, who is from Gombe, a state in Northern Nigeria, is a grade 11 student at the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) Kano, Nigeria.
The maths guru, who was also recognized by mathematics professionals, is said to have started excelling when she was 9 years old.
