Adebayo Taofeek, the Chief PRO of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has revealed that a fake traffic official was arrested at Lekki area of Lagos state on Thursday.
He stated that the fake official, David Oluchukwu wore the LASTMA uniform and appeared to be on duty when he was caught.
He was nabbed by a patrol team. According to Bolaji Oreagba, LASTMA General Manager, the fake official is a member of a criminal gang who had been extorting money from passers by.
“The arrested suspect Mr. David Oluchukwu (27yrs) confessed to having been impersonating as a LASTMA official and extorting money from different motorists particularly commercial bus drivers apprehended for violating traffic laws across the state.
“Mr. Oluchukwu who hailed from ‘Ukpu’ in Anambra State confessed further to be making an average of N40,000 everyday from the illegal traffic business,” the statement read in part.
The victim who had been posing as LASTMA officials for years will now face the court of law. The Nigerian constitution states that impersonation is a crime punishable by law.
In accordance with the Lagos state criminal code, Akerele Kehinde who heads the legal department of LASTMA stated that the 27-year old will be charged to court on Thursday.
