The Nigerian Federal Government declared the 9th and 10th April, 2024, as public holidays to enable Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, also known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting which commenced on 11th March 2024.

Eid al-Fitr is a joyous occasion celebrated with fervor, bringing together families, communities, and friends to commemorate the spiritual significance of the holiday and enjoy festive traditions. It begins with a special prayer service held at mosques across Ikeja. Muslims gather in large congregations, dressed in their finest attire, to offer prayers of gratitude and thanksgiving for the blessings received during Ramadan. The Eid prayer is a communal event, emphasizing unity and solidarity among believers, and is often led by a local religious leader.

Next is Zakat al-Fitr, or the “charity of breaking the fast,” is an obligatory form of charity given by Muslims before the Eid prayer. Muslims fulfill this obligation by donating food or money to the less fortunate, ensuring that everyone in the community can partake in the joy of Eid. Local mosques and charitable organizations often organize distribution efforts to provide assistance to those in need.

And finally, families come together and celebrate, strengthening bonds and creating cherished memories Families gather for festive meals, exchange gifts, and engage in various traditions, such as giving children Eid gifts (Eidi), visiting relatives, and enjoying recreational activities together. In Ikeja, parks, amusement centers, and recreational facilities may see increased activity as families venture out to celebrate Eid in a spirit of joy and togetherness.

However, compared to previous celebrations, there seems to be a calmer celebration, less movements. Perhaps, this could be due to the current economic situation of the country.

Overall, Eid al-Fitr is a time of spiritual renewal, gratitude, and celebration, where Muslims come together to express their faith, share blessings with others, and rejoice in the bonds of family and community.
