The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has encouraged accountants in the state to focus on delivering value in their roles.
He emphasized that this approach will help ensure that the government’s limited resources are used effectively to improve the lives of citizens.
Sanwo-Olu shared this advice while speaking at the 13th Annual Public Lecture organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (Lagos State Public Service Chapter).
Value creation in public service
The event took place at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja.
The governor’s keynote address revolved around the theme of the lecture, which was “Value Creation in Public Service.”
He noted that this topic is quite fitting and timely, given the global economic uncertainty and challenges faced by countries around the world.
Even though Sanwo-Olu couldn’t attend in person, he was represented by the Lagos State Accountant-General, Dr. Abiodun Muritala.
One-third of global GDP is made up by the public sector
The governor highlighted that a significant portion of the world’s economic activity is driven by the public sector, which invests in important services like infrastructure, education, and healthcare in ways that are sustainable for the economy, society, and environment.
During his address, Sanwo-Olu suggested the importance of “integrated reporting of government policies, plans, and programs.”
This approach would help create a comprehensive view of how the government’s actions are contributing to the well-being of the public.
