Concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s voters’ register have emerged ahead of the 2027 general elections following reports of suspicious photographs believed to have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI). The development has raised questions about the verification of voter information and the measures in place to prevent irregularities in the electoral process.
The controversy followed the publication of the preliminary Register of Voters by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on October 26, 2026. After the register became available online, some Nigerians raised concerns about photographs attached to certain voter records, with particular attention drawn to entries linked to a polling unit in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State. Some of the images appeared unusual, prompting suspicions that they might have been artificially generated. However, these suspicions do not, on their own, establish that the individuals or voter records are fraudulent.
In response, INEC said it was reviewing the questionable records and investigating the circumstances surrounding the photographs. The commission explained that the preliminary register published online contained the original records, while data-cleaning and verification activities were ongoing. The review is expected to help establish whether the identified concerns resulted from technical errors, procedural lapses or other irregularities.
The issue has also renewed public concerns about the possibility of duplicate registrations and inconsistencies in voters’ personal information. Although questions have been raised about the accuracy of some entries, such claims require proper verification before conclusions can be drawn. INEC’s investigation will therefore be important in determining whether the concerns point to isolated errors or more significant weaknesses in the voter-registration process.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the attention surrounding the register highlights the growing importance of accurate voter data and effective verification systems. While the use of AI has created new opportunities for digital innovation, it has also made it more difficult to assess the authenticity of certain images without appropriate checks.
The focus now remains on INEC’s investigation and its ability to address the concerns transparently. Ultimately, ensuring that the final voters’ register is accurate, credible and free from confirmed irregularities will be vital to strengthening public trust in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
