In Lagos, it does not take much to get social media talking. Sometimes, a few seconds of a video, a familiar face and a little too much closeness are enough to send Nigerians into investigation mode.
That appears to be what happened after a video showing singer Tiwa Savage and businessman Aremo Oniru at the 10th Supremacy Concert in Lagos surfaced online. The two were seen together backstage, with Aremo standing closely behind the singer as they interacted during the event.
The moment quickly caught the attention of social media users, with some joking about the pair while others began wondering whether there was more to their relationship than friendship. As expected, the comment section soon became a place for theories, jokes and plenty of questions.
But before the internet writes its own love story, there is one important detail: neither Tiwa Savage nor Aremo Oniru has confirmed that they are romantically involved.
The interaction took place at a major entertainment event where several celebrities and high-profile personalities were gathered. In such an environment, celebrities are bound to meet, interact and take pictures with friends and acquaintances. Yet, when it involves someone as famous as Tiwa Savage, even an ordinary interaction can quickly become a trending topic.
This is also not the first time Aremo Oniru has found himself at the centre of online speculation involving a Nigerian celebrity. Earlier this year, his interaction with media personality Toke Makinwa at an event connected to Tiwa Savage also generated questions online, with social media users trying to figure out the nature of their relationship.
The latest incident has once again highlighted how quickly Nigerians turn celebrity friendships into relationship rumours. A hug, a hand on the shoulder, a private conversation or even sitting beside someone at an event can become enough evidence for social media detectives.
For Tiwa Savage, this is hardly unfamiliar territory. As one of Nigeria’s biggest female music stars, her personal life has often attracted almost as much attention as her music. From relationships to friendships and everything in between, fans and critics alike are always curious about the people closest to her.
For now, however, there is no confirmed romance between Tiwa Savage and Aremo Oniru. What Nigerians have is a viral moment, plenty of speculation and a comment section that seems determined to uncover a story that may or may not exist.
Until either of them says otherwise, perhaps the simplest explanation is also the safest:they could just be friends.
But in Lagos, where gist travels faster than traffic on a good day, that may not be enough to stop the speculation.
