The rainy season changes more than just the weather. It influences what is available in the markets, what people crave and even the meals many Nigerian families prepare at home. While the cold weather may keep you indoors, it also brings some of the country’s most loved seasonal foods and fruits into the spotlight.
From roasted or boiled corn paired with coconut to steaming bowls of pepper soup, the rainy season is the perfect time to enjoy comforting meals and fresh produce that are both satisfying and nutritious.
Here are some of the best foods and fruits to enjoy during the rainy season in Nigeria.
- Corn and Coconut (or Ube)

Few food combinations signal the arrival of the rainy season like fresh corn and coconut. Whether you prefer your corn boiled or roasted, pairing it with slices of coconut or ube (African pear) has become a Nigerian tradition. Corn is rich in fibre, B vitamins and antioxidants, while coconut provides healthy fats and minerals, making the combination both filling and nutritious.
- Boiled Groundnuts

Another rainy season favourite is boiled groundnuts. Sold by roadside vendors and markets across Nigeria, they are a warm snack that’s perfect for cool, rainy afternoons and nights. Groundnuts are a good source of protein, healthy fats, magnesium and vitamin E. Boiling them gives them a softer texture, making them an easy snack to enjoy.
- Vegetable-Rich Soups

The rainy season is when many leafy vegetables such as spinach, ugu, ewedu, and water-leaf, are abundant and affordable. It’s an ideal time to prepare some of your favourite soups that are rich in vegetables. Besides being comforting on cold days, these soups provide vitamins A, C and K, iron, calcium and dietary fibre, helping families enjoy balanced meals.
- Pepper Soup

A hot bowl of pepper soup is a go-to for many Nigerians. Whether prepared with catfish, goat meat or chicken, pepper soup is a rainy-day favourite known for its warming spices and rich flavour. Served steaming hot, it is often enjoyed as a light meal or alongside boiled yam, rice or plantain, depending on personal preference.
- Watermelon and Pineapple

Although warm meals are popular during the rains, fresh fruits should not be overlooked. Watermelon and pineapple remain excellent choices because they contain plenty of water, helping you stay hydrated even when you may not feel as thirsty in cooler weather. They are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, making them a refreshing addition to your diet.
