Relief swept across Nigeria after the Federal Government announced the successful rescue of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers who were abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The victims, who spent 56 days in captivity, regained their freedom following a coordinated security operation led by the Nigerian military and other security agencies. Their rescue brings to an end weeks of uncertainty that gripped families, communities and many Nigerians who had followed the case closely.
The pupils and teachers were kidnapped when armed men attacked Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in May. The incident shocked many Nigerians because large-scale school abductions had been more common in parts of northern Nigeria than in the South-West.
According to the Presidency, the rescue followed weeks of sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated operations by security agencies.

President Bola Tinubu said the operation was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Army, with support from other security agencies. During the operation, eight suspected kidnappers were arrested, while an unspecified number of others were neautralised during exchanges with security operatives. Authorities also stated that no ransom was paid to secure the victims’ release.
Earlier in the rescue effort, the Nigerian Air Force deployed surveillance aircraft to provide aerial intelligence, while the military intensified ground operations after intelligence indicated that the victims were being held within the vast Old Oyo National Park.
The successful rescue has been welcomed across the country, particularly by the victims’ families, who had spent nearly two months waiting for good news.
However, the incident has also renewed conversations about school safety and the need to strengthen security around learning institutions across Nigeria.
While the victims are now free, many Nigerians hope lessons from the operation will help prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure that schools remain safe places for children to learn.
