The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other coalition politicians to declare full membership of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The call followed a closed-door stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, convened by the ADC’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark. In attendance were Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and former governors Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Aminu Tambuwal.

At the meeting, members agreed to suspend the ongoing process of registering a new political party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), with INEC. Instead, they resolved to focus their efforts on strengthening the ADC as a united front and pledged support for whoever emerges as the party’s presidential flagbearer in the primaries.

Atiku, in a post on X, described the gathering as “a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land.”

The coalition had earlier, in July 2025, adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. Former Senate President David Mark was named chairman, with Rauf Aregbesola as secretary and Bolaji Abdullahi as publicity secretary. The group described the ADC as a flexible party that could be reshaped to promote internal democracy and restore public trust in governance.
