The University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, has reportedly increased the fees for undergraduate students.

According to a statement from the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (UNILAG branch), the Vice-Chancellor disclosed the new fees during a meeting with the top management staff.

Students are upset about the unexpected and significant increase in school fees at Unilag, the highest ever in the school’s history. The issue has become a hot topic on social media, with many Nigerians expressing their concerns and seeking assistance.

The hike in school fees

Previously, students paid N19,000, but now, those studying medicine will pay N190,250, while courses requiring laboratory and studio will cost N140,250. Students without lab and studio use will pay N100,750.

The university claims the fees were increased due to poor funding from the federal government, and vice-chancellors decided to introduce administrative fees to cover the costs of services provided to students.

Reactions: oh…Unilag wan chase me out

Nigerians are not reacting well to the hike, here are some of the comments:

@john:Improve which conditions? No worry. Una think say that price na unilag final form. They’re just starting

@khaleesi:You think if we could afford to pay that much, most of us would choose to come to Unilag???People are seeing themselves through school. They’ve probably planned exactly how much they need to make this holiday to start a new semester and you just throw 140k at them like that?

@trust: Unilag and Federal Government Colleges just increased tuition fee amid fuel price increase. Everybody just dey collect. Everything is just on the rise with increasing workers salary and I bet 50% of the students their parents would be civil servants.
