President Bola Tinubu, during a meeting with former governors who served with him in the Class of 1999, addressed the concerns of Nigerians regarding the removal of fuel subsidy. 

He acknowledged the suffering caused by the decision but assured the nation that it was made to secure the economic future of Nigeria.

President Tinubu promises to alleviate the negative impact of subsidy removal by rolling out palliative interventions soon and urges citizens to remain steadfast during this period of hardship.

It is a rebirth of the country

During the meeting at the Presidential Villa on July 12, 2023, President Tinubu expressed his understanding of the pains currently being experienced by Nigerians and called for patience as relief packages were being devised.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to intensify efforts, expedite the process, and establish a robust social security structure that would not be compromised, particularly with regard to cash transfers.

While addressing concerns about cash transfers falling into the wrong hands, President Tinubu assured the governors that measures would be put in place to ensure that the palliatives reached those who truly needed them.

President Tinubu’s plead for ₦500 billion for fuel subsidy palliatives

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrote a letter to the House of Representatives, urging an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act in order to enable the Federal Government acquire N500 billion to provide palliatives aimed at alleviating the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read President Tinubu’s letter on the floor of the House.

The letter, titled “Request for the amendment of the 2022 appropriation act,” explained the necessity of sourcing funds to address the consequences of the recent removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.
