7 Months After, Nigerian Man who Bought a Stolen Phone Regains Freedom

Peter David, a Lagos-based man from Kogi State, has regained freedom after spending 7 months in prison over a wrongful incarceration.

David was arrested in May 2022 after he bought a stolen phone for N25,000.

Unaware that the phone was stolen he went home and began to use it but was arrested a few days later at his home in Agege and whisked to Ogba Police Station.

According to Headfort Foundation, a prison reform organization, David spent a month in custody.

On one of her court visits, our lawyer, Thecla Onuagu met David and was moved by his plea for representation. She decided to take on his case, determined to clear his name and bring him justice.

As the court proceedings dragged on with several adjournments and no witnesses to be found, the complainant informed the court that he no longer wished to prosecute the matter, as the person who had stolen the phone had already been caught,” Headfort Foundation said.

Thecla Onuagu, the lawyer who took up David’s case applied to have the case struck out immediately after the news that the main culprit had been caught.

On December 20th, 2022, her application was granted, and David regained his freedom after a difficult seven months in prison.
