Bright Okpocha, Nigerian comedian and actor better known by his stage name Basketmouth, has come under harsh criticism from Nigerians after announcing his UK comedy tour in February.
The comedian in a retweeted post on Wednesday, December 11, had announced that he would be staging his comedy show, Basketmouth Unprovoked” in February.
The time falls within the period Nigeria would be holding its general elections, with presidential and governorship polls holding in the latter part of the second month of the year according to the arrangements put out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Nigerians were, however, not happy with the 44-year-old comedian, with a number of tweeps who saw the tweet questioning his patriotism.
Many disgruntled Nigerians even went deep as far as exhuming old tweets by the comedian criticising celebrities for not showing interest in the country’s polity.
A user wrote: “I’m really disappointed. Before elections, you’re one of the many celebrities who use their platforms to highlight issues and all sorts of societal problems and frauds of the elites now it’s time for elections you’re not only silent you have a show in Hamburg on the day of election.”
An IG user said: “Nigerian celebrities get away with so much BS. This election is basically the last chance to get Nigeria right and someone is touring and distracting people.”
Another one said: “INEC did not check with you? That’s a very dumb and insensitive thing to say.”
Mama zee commented: “INEC should have brought yam and potatoes to your house to appease to you… arindin oshi.”
Basketmouth recently announced separation from his wife after eleven years of marriage. The union is blessed with three kids.
