In response to a directive from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, security operatives have initiated a large-scale clearance operation targeting invaders along the proposed transitway corridor in Abuja’s Mabushi and Katampe Districts.
The operation, described as “the mother of all enforcement exercises,” includes the demolition, clearing, and evacuation of structures, particularly affecting scavengers (locally known as ‘Baban Bolas’), mechanics, and furniture manufacturers.
The clearance also extends to vast cashew plantations and shanties in the area.
This is just an eyesore
During a site visit, Minister Nyesom Wike characterized the location as an eyesore, expressing concerns about its potential connection to criminal activities.
The enforcement exercise aims to address security challenges and restore the proposed dual-mode transportation corridor, which encompasses both bus and tram lines spanning various districts in the city.
This present use of the area is not conducive
Speaking to the media, the coordinator of the FCT City Management Joint Task Team, TPL Mukhtar Galadima, highlighted that the encroached area was originally designated for a dual-mode transportation system.
He emphasized the need for adherence to the master plan of Abuja, which includes provisions for different hierarchy road networks.
Galadima noted that the current use of the area, particularly as a scavenger colony, is not conducive, especially given the prevailing security challenges across the country.
The proposed transitway corridor is designed to traverse the city, starting from Area 1 through Garki Hospital, Social Development Secretariat, behind the Ministry of Defense, and extending to Durumi.
