On Friday, the Lagos State Government shut down Ladipo market, Mushin, one of the popular markets in Lagos.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sealed the gates of the market, restricting movement and sales.

This decision was ordered by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.

According to him, Ladipo market was guilty of several environmental offenses including, reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills, among others.

He stated that the market will remain closed until “the mandatory conditions of redress were met by traders and market stakeholders, adding that it was part of ongoing efforts at instilling compliance in markets around the state.”

What this means for Lagosians

Ladipo market is famous for its auto spare parts and various used items like electronics, appliances, and more.

This means that for the time being, Lagosians will be unable to purchase these items, unless they visit other markets such as Yaba, Lawanson market, amongst others.

Also, the traders within the market must comply with the directives of Lagos State, to maintain a cleaner environment.

Voices heard at the background of the video expressed shock as a popular actor seen in the market selling goods is not a common sight.
