Tomato price is currently causing Nigerians discomfort as some pepper sellers share why the food item suddenly skyrocketed in price.
Meanwhile, residents of Abuja in an interview with Punch shared that some of them were now resorting to using garden eggs and carrots because of the prices of tomatoes.
In an interview with Punch, a resident who is a mother of five, Mrs Jumai Amodu shared how she was managing amidst the current price of tomatoes.

“Since tomatoes became very expensive, we decided to use garden egg for stew and it is as sweet as tomato stew. The only major difference between garden egg stew and tomato stew is the color. We also use pumpkin stew with rice sometimes and although it has its unique taste, it blends well with rice,” she said.
Fuel price is the major reason for the rise in tomato prices
Speaking to a correspondent, Adedoyin Adebisi, from Ikejabird, a woman who sells pepper in Lagos State, Ipaja Ayobo, Mrs. Ganiyat explained what suddenly caused the spur in the price of the food item.
According to her, it is usually not uncommon to see a spur in the prices of tomatoes during this season especially because of the Sallah, however, the prices seem to be much more different from the rest of the previous years.
Speaking in Yoruba she shared that the major reason for the increase in the price was because of the fuel subsidy, Mrs. Ganiyat continued that the transportation from the North to Lagos has really affected the prices because fuel is not sold at the price it used to be sold.
Another pepper seller, Abdullah shared that the traders transporting pepper from the North calculate the prices of fuel they use for transportation and add it to the way they sell the tomatoes which caused a tremendous change in tomato prices, hence he made it clear that if the prices of fuel do not reduce, then there’s a big possibility of tomatoes prices continue skyrocketing.
