The Nigerian federal government has expressed concern over the low participation of women in leadership and political positions, stating that it is unacceptable. 

At the two- day dissemination/ sensitization workshop in the revised 2021- 2026 National Gender Policy for the North Central Geo- political Zone in Abuja  the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Women Affairs, Monilola Udoh, emphasized that women make up about half of the population and should have equal opportunities in governance.

Udoh also stated the need to bridge gender gaps and ensure women’s inclusion in decision-making processes.

We are tired of pet programme

She urged states to implement laws that protect women’s rights, as many still face discrimination based on their gender. The review of the 2006 National Gender Policy was also carried out because of  these ongoing challenges.

She specifically said:

“We can never develop if 50 per cent of the population are left behind. Fifty per cent is not representing the reality. We are tired of pet programme. We must be brought into the mainstream”

Bridge gender/social inclusion gaps

The overall goal of the revised National Gender Policy is to create a just society where women, girls, and other vulnerable groups have equal opportunities and rights without any discrimination. 

She also said: 

“The strategic objectives of the revised National Gender Policy are to: Bridge gender/social inclusion gaps and achieve parity in all spheres of life Protect women’s human rights and mitigate sexual and gender- based violence, through appropriate buffers and related services”

Its objectives include achieving gender parity in all aspects of life, protecting women’s human rights, promoting women’s economic empowerment, and enhancing their participation in leadership and governance.

A young 23-year-old Nigerian student has received a standing ovation from fellow Nigerians after her jaw-dropping achievement in school.

Aminat Imoitesemeh Yusuf graduated from Lagos State University with a perfect CGPA ( Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 5.0, becoming the best student and valedictorian in the school’s 26th convocation.

Aminah who studied Law had many people in awe of her result as the Governor of Lagos State, Babjide Sanwo Olu showed up in the convocation to gift the lady an award for her achievement.
