Shortly after Nigeria’s new President, Bola Tinubu, announced the removal of fuel subsidy, long queues reappeared at petrol stations in major cities, particularly in Lagos. Some stations even began closing their pumps.

Motorists flocked to Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) stations in Ikeja and Alausa, leading to overcrowding as people rushed to purchase fuel. Many parts of Lagos experienced large queues at NPC stations, which is uncommon, especially on a public holiday.

President Tinubu announced this during his inaugural speech at Eagle Square in Abuja on Monday. He stated that he was informed there was no provision for fuel subsidy and that it could no longer be justified.

Nigerians react to the fuel subsidy removal 

The president’s announcement of the subsidy removal has sparked reactions among Nigerians, leading to widespread unrest and commotion across the country.

Tinubu, in his inaugural speech on Monday, said: “Fuel subsidy is gone.”

He said: “Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources.

“We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, health care and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions.

“No provision for fuel subsidy.”

Tinubu becomes President of Nigeria, Shettima Vice President, Buhari leaves

In another news, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn in as the president of Nigeria while Kashim Shettima administered the oath as the vice president today, May 29, 2023, by the Chief Justice of the country, Olukayode Ariwoola.

Following their administration of the swearing-in, the two assumed office officially as President and Vice president of Nigeria.

According to Vanguard, at exactly 10:36 am, Bola Ahmed Tinubu took the oath and at 10:28 am, the Vice president did the needful and was invited to take his seat at the VIP stand, the ceremony was held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
