The tension escalated during the 65th minute of the football match, as the center referee, Ayo Amos, brandished a red card to Amotekun defender Akinloye Ismail Babatunde, Force No: AMT/AN/21418, for violent conduct against the police defender, Odukoya Olanrewaju.

A dramatic incident unfolded in Ogun State as Amotekun Corps personnel resorted to the use of charms and knives in an altercation with police officers during the Value Jet/SWAN Security Cup.

In the 52nd minute of the quarterfinal game, when the police officers scored their second goal, the rowdy Amotekun personnel, who were participating in the ongoing football competition organized by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State chapter, lost control.

How it all started 

The atmosphere grew increasingly tense during the 65th minute when the center referee, Ayo Amos, issued a red card to Amotekun defender Akinloye Ismail Babatunde, Force No: AMT/AN/21418, for a violent incident involving police defender Odukoya Olanrewaju.

Odukoya Olanrewaju, a police defender, also received a red card from the referee for retaliatory actions.

Akinloye, the dismissed Amotekun defender, immediately returned to the field and assaulted Constable Adesina James, a police officer who was actively engaged in the game.

The disturbing turn of events prompted the intervention of spectators from the stands, who rushed onto the pitch to protect the police officer from the mob attack by the Amotekun personnel.

Amotekun attacks police with charms 

In a surprising and alarming twist, one of the Amotekun defenders, Tejuoso Segun with Force No: AMT/AS/21201, dashed off the pitch and reappeared with a charm and a broken bottle, which he used to attack Inspector Ogunremi Oluwafemi, causing a deep cut injury to his lower jaw.

Inspector Ogunremi remained unconscious for a brief period before being revived and promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment.The match was prematurely concluded in the 67th minute.

In the 2021 edition of the SWAN/Security Cup, Amotekun Operatives confronted referees and spectators on the football field with charms.

Addressing journalists in Abeokuta, the chairman of the organizing committee, Hakeem Akintunde, expressed deep disappointment in the behavior of the supposed security operatives.

Akintunde emphasized that the conduct of these officers violated the rules and spirit of the competition.

As the former SWAN Chairman, he called upon all participating security agencies to exhibit decorum and behave in a manner befitting their roles as trained officers responsible for the safety of lives and property.
