Annette Echikunwoke and Ezinne Abba left Nigeria to represent the US abroad; however, they were not selected for the US squad travelling to Budapest for the World Championships.
They recently competed in the US Championships and learned they would not be competing at the World Championships in Budapest this summer after failing to make the US squad.
Echikunwoke placed fifth in the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 73.09 meters, while Abba failed to qualify for either of the finals in the 100- or 200-meter races.

What made them dump Nigeria for the United States
Echikunwoke was chosen to represent Nigeria in January 2021 and earned a spot in the Tokyo Olympics; she set four consecutive African and Nigerian records in the women’s hammer throw with throws of 75.49 meters.
Unfortunately, she left Nigeria to compete for the US because the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) was careless in arranging drug testing and failed to notify her that she needed to be available. This shameful act of the AFN impacted ten Nigerian athletes.
Abba also decided against tolerating the AFN’s inefficiency or uncertainty to take the difficult way of assembling the US team.

Tobi Amusan wins third consecutive national women’s 100m hurdles title
In another news, World Record holder Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan has secured her third consecutive national title in the women’s 100 meters hurdles event at the ongoing Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) national trials in Benin, Edo state.
Amusan delivered another exceptional performance in the final at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, solidifying her dominance by clocking a time of 12.70 seconds. With a lead of at least 10 meters over her closest competitor, this triumph signifies her fourth national title.
This remarkable victory marks Amusan’s third consecutive national title, adding to her previous wins at the Olympic trials in Lagos in 2021 and in Benin last year.
