On Monday, students of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, commenced balloting for hostel accommodation, however this sparked a multitude of complaints.
The students expressed their frustration with the ballot system, which posed challenges in securing accommodation.
Despite the seemingly straightforward process of reserving hostel spaces on the school’s portal, technical issues have persistently made it difficult for them.

They recently expressed their disappointment with the unusually low number of students who were able to secure accommodation.
Ikejabird discovered that one male hostel and two female hostels are undergoing renovations, causing a shortage of bed spaces for students.
However, the Dean of Students Affairs, DSA, Prof Musa Obalola, attributed the challenges to network issues and incompatible devices.
He also revealed that the congestion on the school portal is as a result of over 35,000 students competing for only 8,000 bed spaces.
Recall that the University of Lagos increased the tuition and hostel to fees to more than 400%.
Reactions: “UNILAG accommodation ballot system is corrupt”
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the students shared their experiences on balloting for accommodation. Here are some comments:
@Tranquilinks: Unilag’s ballot system/issue is so frustrating. Every year my sister has to go through this annoying process.
@rahman_is_himmm: Unilag no reallll. After suffering to ballot, only to receive mail say e don finish.
@alt_smith_: You fit ballot successfully make e no still Dey successful… only unilag.
@ObasekiGino: UNILAG’s accommodation ballot system is a true reflection of the corruption that happens even in our voting system. A large % of the hostels have been allocated before balloting by those who have “already reserved spaces”. I dare the school to provide the metrics for selection.
@omowunmi: Unilag is such a messed up school! Because tell me why we struggled to pay the increased fee amongst everything we needed money for just so I could ballot and at 9:33am my chances had been cut short? For something that started by 9am?
