Dr. Jane Bevan, Chief of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) at UNICEF Nigeria, expressed, satisfaction during a presentation of a WASH Master Plan to the governor at the Enugu Government House.

Bevan explained, “We presented this initial outline of a master plan to achieve the SDGs by 2030. With the commitment shown by the governor, I believe Enugu is on the right path to achieve these goals.”

Governor Mbah appreciated UNICEF’s support and highlighted the state’s focus on water provision since taking office.

We’ve embarked on an aggressive campaign

He mentioned that the governor and local government chairmen meet regularly to discuss development plans, making it easier for local governments to carry out WASH projects and end open defecation.

The governor shared, “We’ve embarked on an aggressive campaign to provide water for our city and rural areas. 

The Chief of WASH’s presentation identified challenges and solutions. We have a goal to end open defecation by 2025.”

There is only 102 days left 

Regarding urban water supply, Governor Mbah revealed that there are 102 days left to fulfill the promise of consistent water supply within 180 days. 

He assured that the state is working to generate more than enough water and to fix any leaks in reservoirs to ensure efficient distribution.

The UNICEF delegation included Chiranjibi Tiwari, WASH Manager, UNICEF Abuja; Dr. Olusoji Akinley, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Enugu; and Timi Kiakubu, WASH Specialist, UNICEF Enugu.

In another news, Abba Hikima, a public analyst, has lamented over the hawking of UNICEF relief material in several states in Nigeria.

The UNICEF material he spoke about was a sky blue bag with the organization’s name written boldly on it.

The public analyst said he is shocked to see children selling material meant to be free on the street.
