On 28th October, 2021 at Akintola hostel University of Nigeria Nsukka, an awareness show was held for Shaggy Black Concert where Mirabel Obi a first year medical student went home with #10,000 cash reward in the twerking competition.
Awareness shows are usually done a night before the event to inform people about a show. Dancing competitions are the usual ways to catch people’s attention.
This particular dancing competition was giving away cash prizes for whoever emerged as the winner. Mirabel and some other girls participated but she out paced the others when she pulled down her shorts to twerk. At this point, students made videos of her and uploaded them on social media which attracted the attention of the Dean of Student Affairs of the University. He said that such an act was not accepted in the school and she would be prosecuted accordingly and expelled.
Dubby Gustavo, a night club runner in the area reached out to the dean who had threatened to expel her asking why he would do that. It is said he also gave Mirabel the sum of 5 million naira to encourage her.
Students of UNN have expressed mixed reactions. Kachi Udengwu believes the dean went too far in trying to expel her. “She has the right to do whatever she wants with her body,” he said.
However, Isioma Okafor contends that as much as it’s her body she shouldn’t have been half clad. “I believe in modesty. Everything should be done with modesty.”
A lecturer who asked to remain anonymous said the issue of expelling her goes beyond just twerking in public, “it’s against the rules to be nude or partially clad and she should face the wrath of the school.”
Mike, a close friend and classmate of Mirabel, disclosed that her family members have asked her to leave her first semester exams and come home. He said Mirabel believes once she goes home she won’t be able to return to school ever again.”
Mirabel has deactivated her Instagram account which speedily rose from zero to 3,000 followers with thousands of views on her videos after the twerking saga.
Speaking to Mike about the account deactivation, he revealed that Mirabel Obi deactivated the account on the orders of her elder sister.
Currently, the school panel has taken up the matter but nothing has been said as regards her fate by the school.
It is being too rude and should be displined according,my humble suggestion.
