Trouble in paradise: Napoli President faces investigation for false accounting in Osimhen’s deal

Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles striker, moved from LOSC Lille in France to Napoli in Italy during the summer of 2020 for around €75 million.

Now, there’s a situation where the boss of Napoli, Aurelio De Laurentiis, is being looked into by investigators. He might have done something wrong with the money and accounting related to Osimhen’s transfer.

The investigation mainly concerns suspicions of fake profit numbers and money issues connected to Osimhen’s move to Napoli. In simpler terms, they’re checking if the deal was handled dishonestly or in a tricky way.

What happened

The Nigerian player joined Napoli for a total of €71.2 million. However, around €20.1 million, part of that money was paid by sending four other players to the selling team.

Now, investigators suspect that the salaries of these four players were valued too high to make Napoli’s financial gains look bigger than they actually were.

To look into this, Italy’s Financial Police, called Guardia Di Finanza, collected documents related to the transfer deal between April and June 2023.

They did this on behalf of the Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office and searched in different places in Italy and France for evidence.

This investigation of Aurelio De Laurentiis is something they have to do by law because the Naples Prosecutor’s Office sent the documents to Rome. De Laurentiis has a company called FilmAuro in Rome, and that’s where the investigation is focused. It’s basically a legal requirement to check if everything was done correctly in the transfer deal.

Osimhen’s rift with the coach

Osimhen has also had problems with his behavior towards his coach, Rudi Garcia, during a game against Bologna. So, there’s some tension in the team because of that.

If Napoli is found guilty of doing something wrong with Osimhen’s transfer, he might eventually have to leave the team.

But it’s important to understand that this investigation is a regular thing in the world of soccer. They do it to make sure everything is fair and clear when it comes to money in football transfers.
