Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is set to make his debut on the global stage as he addresses the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday, September 19.
Tinubu’s speech is scheduled for the evening session, making him the fifth African leader to take the floor on the first day of the Assembly’s gathering.
He will be among a total of 20 leaders delivering speeches on the opening day.
He is to deliver his statement around 6pm
The day’s proceedings will commence with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa as the first African leader to speak during the morning session.
In the afternoon, five African leaders are lined up to address the gathering, with Nigerian President Tinubu being the final African speaker of the day, expected to deliver his statement around 6pm local time (11pm Nigerian time).
During the opening session of UNGA 78 on September 5, Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago will officially assume the role of President for the next 12 months.
The high-level General Debate, taking place from September 19 to September 29, will center around the theme of “rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.”

Meanwile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to address the nation today, Monday, at 7 pm.
The announcement was made by his Special Adviser, Dele Alake, who urged TV, radio stations, and other media outlets to tune in to the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast.
The purpose of the broadcast has not been disclosed officially, but it’s likely to address important issues like insecurity, food security, subsidy removal, and the planned industrial action by the Nigerians Labour Congress (NLC).
