Tinubu orders payment of four months ASUU withheld salaries

President Bola Tinubu has invoked the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy to approve a partial waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” Order imposed on striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The strike began on February 14, 2022, and ended on October 17, 2022.

President Tinubu’s decision is aimed at easing the challenges faced during the implementation of crucial economic reforms and recognizing the commitment to agreed terms by ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria

Under this directive, previously striking ASUU members will receive four months’ worth of withheld salaries out of the eight months of their industrial action.

The President has stipulated that this waiver is exceptional and final, with the condition that the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment must establish a Document of Understanding (DoU) confirming that no further waivers will be granted to ASUU or other education sector unions.
