These historical tourist attractions play a vital role in preserving and showcasing it for future generations to appreciate.
They attract tourists who are interested in learning about the rich heritage and stories associated with them. Here are three (3) notable historical tourist attractions in Ikeja:

1. Fela Shrine: This is also known as the New Afrika Shrine. It is a renowned entertainment and tourist center located in Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos. It holds great significance in Nigeria as it pays tribute to the legendary musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who pioneered the Afrobeats genre. The original shrine, built by Fela in the 1970s, unfortunately, fell victim to a fire set by the military in 1997. However, a new Shrine was built in 2000 to honor and preserve his legacy.
Managed by his children, Femi Kuti and Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, the Shrine offers visitors a chance to explore Fela’s photo galleries, delve into the mini museum, and attend captivating evening performances by Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti. It’s a vibrant hub that not only celebrates Fela’s music but also serves as the host location for the annual Felabration, a music festival that commemorates his remarkable contributions. The New Afrika Shrine is a testament to the great contributions of Fela and provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in his life and legacy.
2. Murtala Muhammed International Airport: This is not only Nigeria’s largest and busiest major gateway for several airlines, but it also has a fascinating history. It was originally established as Lagos International Airport in 1947 during pre-colonial times, around the Second World War.
It was renamed in honor of General Murtala Muhammed (1938–1976), the fourth military head of state, who tragically lost his life in a failed coup attempt. The current international airport terminal was built and commissioned over 40 years ago in 1978. It officially opened its doors on March 15, 1979. Today, it serves as a vital hub for both domestic and international flights, connecting Nigeria to destinations all over the world. The airport’s history is a testament to its significance and importance in Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
3. Kalakuta Museum: This holds a special place in preserving the legacy of Fela Kuti, the afrobeat legend. Originally located in the Lagos suburb of Surulere, the iconic Kalakuta Republic was tragically burnt down by the army. However, it was later rebuilt in Ikeja. After Fela’s passing in 1997, the museum fell into despair until his daughter took the initiative to rebuild it. On October 15, 2012, which marked Fela Kuti’s birthday, the museum was officially opened to the public.
Inside the Kalakuta Museum, you’ll find a treasure trove of personal artifacts and household items that belonged to Fela, including his trademark clothes and shoes. The walls are adorned with historic photographs, posters, paintings, murals, album covers, and newspaper cuttings that showcase his remarkable journey. Fela’s bedroom and living room have been preserved almost untouched, with additional photographs and items proudly displayed, such as his saxophone and album covers. Notably, Fela’s tomb can also be found next to the house.
The Kalakuta Museum is currently managed by Fela’s son, Kunle, and attracts tourists from all over the world who are captivated by the life and impact of this legendary musician. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone interested in immersing themselves in the vibrant history and cultural heritage of Fela Kuti.
